In conjunction with my career as a poet, I have earned a living in book publishing as an editor and writer since graduating from college. I’ve worked as an editorial assistant at Riverside Publishing, as the first paid employee at Alice James Books, and as an editor in Houghton Mifflin Company’s Secondary English Department.
A long-time freelance writer, I have worked for many major educational publishers and developers throughout the United States. I have written print and digital student books, teacher’s guides, ancillaries, and assessments for Kindergarten through Grade 12 students, primarily in reading, literature, spelling, grammar and composition, and social studies.
The credited author of more than forty educational books, I have contributed to hundreds more. Among my favorite projects are the following:
- Houghton Mifflin English: Grammar and Composition, Grades 7 to 12
(I wrote examples, models, and unit tests for Houghton’s first grammar and composition series.)
- Heath Middle Level Literature
(I helped create the first literature anthologies for middle-school students.)
- The Language of Literature: American Literature
(I wrote the entire apparatus except for one unit for McDougal Littell.)
- America’s Notable Women
(I researched and wrote profiles for four different state titles in this Apprentice Shop Books series.)
